Dr. Miralles gave a summary of current challenges the industry is facing and future directions for J&J. Dr. Xiaodong Wang then described, in depth, the outstanding work his group is currently focusing on–apoptosis signaling pathways and its modulation using SMAC mimetics with the potential to overcome cancer resistance.

Two local biotechnology companies from San Diego , Ambrx represented by its CEO Dr. Steve Kaldor and Intellikine represented by its CEO Dr. Troy Wilson, showcased their cutting-edge technologies and forward thinking business models, with Ambrx focusing on engineered proteins as biologic therapeutics, and Intellikine is pushing 3 small molecules targeting PI3K/mTOR pathway into the clinic. There was also discussion on genomics, personalized medicine, and the state of art enabling tools. A San Diego based diagnostics company, Illumina, represented by SVP Gregory F. Heath, showed how Illumina's technology platform and its DNA sequencing instrument HiSeq 2000 will help unlock the genomic code, accelerate clinical applications, and transform the industry. Dr. Richard Neale, Chief Business Officer of Scripps Translational Science Institute then offered his perspective on the clinical side of the business and the health reform.

A highlight of the event was the annual award presentation to the legendary WuXiAppTec founder Dr. Ge Li by SABPA president Xiangming Fang.
