1. Report for the 5th SABPA Pacific Forum on Life Science Alliances (Nov. 7, 2009)

The 5th Sino-American Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SABPA) Annual Pacific Forum on Life Science Alliance-Riding the Wave, was co-chaired by Zhu Shen and Shuguang Zhu. The event attracted about 300 attendees in life science and business fields from southern California, New York City, China and Australia.

Like our previous annual Forums, this event invited an array of prominent speakers and panelists: BIOCOM’s CEO, Joseph Panetta, described BIOCOM’s Asia-Pacific Initiatives; Ted Plafker, bestselling author and Beijing Correspondent for The Economist, gave our morning keynote lecture and shared his view on how to profit in China-the world's fastest growing market; panel speakers from Australia, China, and Taiwan discussed pharmaceutical and biotech development around the Pacific Rim. Leaders from Suzhou Industry Park Minglong Ma and Yuwen Liu showcased the impressive growth Suzhou and its biotech cluster-BioBay experienced in recent years.

In the afternoon sessions, Forward Ventures’ Founding Managing Partner, Ivor Royston, gave our afternoon keynote lecture, which was an insightful speech on the trends and strategies of venture capital funding in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry. Peng Chen of Morrison Foerster shared his expert knowledge about the sweeping changes in IP laws and how they impact life science companies across the Pacific. Our final discussion panel consisted of outstanding professionals in both legal and biotechnology industries that discussed and shared insights on doing business in the currently shifting regulatory, investment, and economic environment.

This successful event was the culmination of excellent teamwork. Thanks to the organization committee, fundraising and all the support teams, as well as numerous SABPA volunteers who worked extremely diligently throughout the preparation to make this happen. Some event photos captured some memorable moments. A complete report and some speaker slides can be found here,

4. SABPA New Website and Webmaster Volunteer Needed.

SABPA’s website is a window into the inner workings of the association. This website was established alongside SABPA in 2002. Since 2006, our website has more than 20000 visits. The goal of our website is to provide a broadcasting platform for each SABPA committee to broadcast news, association events and community information and provide service for SABPA members. As you may noticed, SABPA had its website face lifted since middle of October. Thanks to web design company, Avscientific.com, and joined efforts of SABPA communication and webmaster teams, the new website has a new head banner, slide show and re-arranged side panels on home page, and many modifications on other pages. The new functions, such as site-search function, member registration and group email delivery etc, are not only more user-friendly but also make it easier to maintain.
Currently, we are looking for volunteers who like to dedicate his/her time and talents to help maintaining SABPA website. The webmaster job request to communicate with broad members and other volunteers to keep the website updated in time, to create and/or modify new web pages when needed. It needs dedication and attention to details. Prior knowledge or experience with HTML or PHP is required. Experience of database and simple photo edition are desirable but not required. If you would like to volunteer to donate your time to become part of our webmaster team, please contact webmaster@sabpa.org.
