1. SABPA OC/LA Chapter Activities
With the tremendous efforts from the committee and volunteers, SABPA OC/LA Chapter has accomplished major milestones in organizational development and event planning streamline. The 4th annual Biomedical Forum was successfully held and well attended with outstanding speakers and a new venue. Several social events throughout the year, such as the May Team Social Gathering helped strengthen the team connections. Financially, the Chapter is strong. Two more committee events will be held in 2009. On event is on Biotech Outlook and the second event is on Medical Device Innovation Strategies. 2. Board Meeting (Sep. 26, 2009)
SABPA held its last board meeting on September 26th, 2009 at Fish & Richardson’s San Diego office. There are 17 board members from both of the San Diego chapter and the Orange County/Los Angeles chapter, along with 3 secretaries attending. Hui Cai, the chairwoman of the board welcomed all of the new members since the last election.
The meeting started with the approval of the last board meeting minutes followed by the organization reviews presented by both of the San Diego chapter president Xiangming Fang and the OC/LA chapter president Hengchu Cao. With the organization becoming more mature, an orientation folder containing 11 documents on SABPA by-laws and policies were presented to all of the board members for orientation and additional discussion. The board also confirmed the nominations of Peter Zhu as the executive vice president of the San Diego chapter and Fred Ouyang as the executive vice president of the OC/LA chapter.
Overall, both of the chapters have experienced very healthy team building, and have hosted many successful events includes our well attended 8th biopharmaceutical conference

The Annual Pacific Forum organized by Sino-American Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SABPA) has provided the community an essential platform for entrepreneurs, scientists, investors, executives, and policy makers to promote life sciences and biotechnology and life science alliances across the Pacific Rim. In the last few years, Pacific Forum attracted over 300 attendees, multiple local and national media outlets, dozens of corporate sponsors, and event partners including BIOCOM and CONNECT.

Associate director/director, antibody specialist (1): Crown Bioscience (Taicang) seeks an exceptionally talented and motivated individual to join a highly interactive oncology center of research and development. The core responsibilities include building and leading the antibody generation and engineering group to support project needs, planning, managing and execution of projects on hybridoma generation, antibody production and antibody engineering.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in a biology discipline, hands on experience and strong expertise in monoclonal antibody generation and antibody engineering. Experience with antibody humanization desirable but not required. Industrial experience in drug discovery is required. Good written and verbal communication skills, strong capability in technical trouble shooting. Must be able to motivate fellow team members and work with passion and enthusiasm on cancer research and development.
Associate director/director level (2), cancer cell biology: Crown Bioscience (Taicang) seeks two exceptionally talented and motivated individual to join a highly interactive oncology center of research development. The successful candidate will lead a group of cross-function scientists in cell biology, molecular biology. The main responsibilities are to identify and validate new cancer drug targets, develop and perform primary and secondary biological assays, and conduct cell-based assays to guide preclinical studies.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in cell biology with expertise in cancer biology preferred, hands on experience and strong expertise in cell biology, assay development, and screening. Industrial experience in drug discovery is required. Good written and verbal communication skills, strong capability in technical trouble shooting. Must be able to motivate fellow team members and work with passion and enthusiasm on cancer research and development.
Director of DMPK (1): The Department of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics at Crown BioScience is seeking to recruit a highly motivated Director to lead a team of bioanalytical scientists. This individual and its team will support research projects ranging from early to late stage discovery and up to proof of concept in the clinic.
Qualifications:
• A Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism or other relevant scientific field
• At least 5 years of industrial experience
• Extensive experience in LC-MS based bioanalysis in support of drug discovery and preclinical development is required
• Excellent scientific track record as well as excellent communication and interaction skills are essential
• Experience with GLP and regulatory compliance is a plus
Associate Director/Director Oncology/Genomic/Biomarkers
The Department of Pathology, Biomarkers, Genomics, Huprime Models, In Vivo pharmacology is a Translational Cancer Pharmacology group dedicated to delivering high quality data, helping to translate preclinical research discoveries into effective therapeutics. An important part of Crownbio oncology CRO service is the use of comprehensive biomarker technologies and strategies together with our unique in vivo models (Human primary tumor xenografts) and cancer cell xenograft models to evaluate drug activity. Our translational oncology services are to determine the efficacious response (tumor shrinkage and survival), PD biomarkers, pathway specific biomarkers, endpoint biomarkers, predictive biomarkers, surrogate biomarkers. The emphasis of relevant model profiling and novel PD-biomarkers will help to drive the decision making on which drugs to bring forwards and how to dose them appropriately. We are currently looking for a highly skilled and passionate leader for our Genomic/Biomarkers group. The successful candidate will lead a large group of scientists and research associates to successfully integrate Genomics/PD-Biomarkers strategies and assays into our preclinical CRO service platforms. He/She will provide scientific leadership for the company's efforts to develop model profiling platforms, PD-biomarker strategies and novel assays to explain the drug MOA, activity and relevant biological effects in Huprime models, cancer cell line models. This candidate will be expected to form close collaborations with our Pathology/Biomarker, Target Validation, Huprime Models, In Vivo Pharmacology, DMPK groups.
Primary responsibilities are as follows:
Provide scientific leadership for the company's Genomic/Biomarker strategies and model profiling for all oncology projects. Advance the understanding of the pharmacology on client test drugs and cancer. Integrate molecular profiling and PD-markers into our joint drug development programs when appropriate. Lead the group in data analysis (trouble shooting) and report preparation for our clients. Provide first class strategic and scientific advice regarding Genomic/Oncology-Biomarkers to Senior Leadership. Drive scientific and technical innovation. Work with Departmental and Senior Leadership to prioritize Biomarker programs to ensure timely delivery of assignments for our clients.
Requirements:
PhD or M.D./PH.D. degree in relevant scientific field (e.g. Molecular Biology, Cancer biology, Molecular Oncology, Pharmacology, Pathology). A strong knowledge of genomic, molecular profiling, and PD-biomarkers and their use in defining PK/PD and dose-response relationships is attractive, but not mandatory. A minimum of 4 years post doctoral basic or preclinical drug research experience. Demonstrated record of cutting edge research as evidenced by first- or senior-authored publications in top-tiered journals. Relevant industry experience highly preferred. Excellent cross-functional team leadership and participation skills. Ability to build, lead and manage a large group of highly motivated scientists is required. Ability to lead, influence and motivate others, both within direct supervisory and matrixed environments. Ability to demonstrate effectiveness and growth in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
